Genius Hour Part 2

Genius Hour:

Over the last week I have begun doing some of the research on my genius hour pierogie project.  I thought it was best to start off with the historical research before getting into the cooking process with my family (also they're all coming over for thanksgiving soon so I'll be swimming in them soon enough).  Specifically, I was trying to determine what regional/cultural differences exist regarding how pierogies are traditionally made across different countries, and if there is a particular reason for that.

One example of this I found was the phenomenon in Poland of a dessert pierogi containing fruit.  Up until this project I had no idea that a sweet pierogi existed as when I was growing up we always traditionally used cheese and potato.  It was also surprising to see that a number of eastern European countries tend to put ground meat in their pierogies, as again I was under the impression it was a potato based food.

That being said they look awfully good so I may have to try them out soon!

Thus far I haven't had to many troubles finding research as there is an endless amount of historical information for me to discover online.  The one area I can foresee there being an issue in the future however, could be finding out particular reasons why countries cook pierogies the way that they do.

By next week I am aiming to have all of my theoretical research done and all that is left is actually cooking the pierogies from home and the local church to determine which style of cooking makes them taste the best.

Educational Tech:

So far in this course, I have been exposed to countless ways to integrate technology into learning that I was unaware of in the past.  This has changed the way I feel about educational technology as I now know just how expansive the world of educational tech is.  Before this class the phrase "technology in the class" only extended to the use of PowerPoint, Youtube, SmartBoards etc.  After the last few weeks though, I have been exposed to a huge variety of assessment and learning tools that I did not know existed and can be used to assess or teach every aspect of classroom learning.

The TPACK badges I have been earning have particularly been useful in providing this "ah-ha" realisation about the variety of resources over the last few weeks and has provided me with a great base of tools to use in class.  In particular, our use of the app "plickers" which acts as a form of clicker, used to gather student responses to a question quickly and anonymously, using the teachers mobile device.  I can easily see myself using this in my own lessons, specifically before the start of group work, as it can give me a quick idea of who I should be checking up on to make sure the concepts are being understood, and who I can leave to do their work independently.
